Rarity and condition are the crucial elements in establishing the value of a coin. Rarity is comparatively easy to establish, as there is extensive historic data from auctions and dealer’s lists to substantiate the relative rarity of most coins. Evaluating and determining condition is more of a challenge.

In 1948, a well-known numismatist by the name of Dr. William Sheldon endeavored to regulate coin grading by suggesting what is now known as the “Sheldon Scale”. His measure, which runs from one to 70, was originally developed specifically for large cents, but it has now been adopted for all series of US and World coins. The Sheldon Scale was a vast improvement over rudimentary grades such as Good, Fine, and Mint state yet even with this rather revolutionary 70 point scale there was still substantial room for disagreement among two parties based on the subjective art of grading.

In a bold attempt to standardize grading two totally independent third-party grading services emerged. In 1986 PCGS/Professional Coin Grading Service started to independently numerically grade and encapsulate coins taking out the guesswork and “bartering factor”. In 1987 NGC/Numismatic Guaranty Corp. began a similar service. Through the years tens of millions of coins have been encapsulated, graded and archived by these two prestigious firms ; not only guaranteeing the assigned grade of a given coin they also forever guarantee the authenticity of that coin. Both PCGS/NGC have assembled the finest, most respected team of graders in the industry.

Individuals or dealers submitting coins to either of these services remain anonymous, thus ensuring that the multiple graders reviewing and establishing the numeric grade treat all submissions the same and that no preferential treatment or favoritism exists. PCGS and NGC are the two most respected names in third-party grading in the numismatic world. Millions of dollars’ worth of PCGS/NGC Certified Coins exchange hands annually at auction, on the bourse floor at major conventions, or trading on an electronic network both seen or sight unseen much like stock. Liquidity, strength, demand and unquestioned authenticity is why National Coin Broker only buys, sells and trades coins encapsulated and graded by either PCGS/NGC.

The S.S. Central America carried the most talked about treasure in American history. When the United States Mail Steamship Central America sank in deep water off the coast of the Carolinas during a monstrous 1857 hurricane, it created a genuine American ship wreck treasure. Bound for New York with 578 passengers and crew, and 38,000 pieces of mail, the Central America also held tons of gold ingots, coins, nuggets, and dust mined from the western gold fields during a defining quarter-century when the country came of age.

The precious cargo included approximately 5,200 recently-minted $20- denomination (“Double Eagle”) gold pieces produced in 1857 at the San Francisco Mint. The gold for these coins was mined during the California Gold Rush. There also was a much smaller quantity of other historic gold coins that circulated in the Wild West.

Soon thereafter the Central America came to rest in the darkness 8,000 feet below the surface, about 160 miles offshore from Charleston, South Carolina. Passenger gold was scattered here and there around the ship’s hulk and the surrounding sea bottom. In the hold, still stored in the wooden boxes that had been carried along the Pacific Coast by the Sonora, the treasure of gold coins and ingots remained intact.

At the final reckoning of the SS Central America disaster, about 425 lives were lost. Only 153 were saved.

Without question, the “Ship of Gold” is, as LIFE Magazine wrote in March 1992, “The Greatest Treasure Ever Found.” There are no historic records of any other ship that was lost with a treasure so rich in precious metals and historic significance as that of the SS Central America.

And Now you can Own a Piece of this Treasure !
